Sustainability Program

Mission

The mission of this program is for Tribal community to become aware of the Tribe’s world view, and traditional tools that work toward restoring Earth balance. And, where appropriate, educate other organizations and communities about the Tribe’s world view and appropriate traditional knowledge, which will assist in restoring a safe and stable climate. Additionally, we work to ensure that all tribally sponsored community functions continue to honor our relationship and responsibility to our Mother Earth.

Waste Reduction Information

Please be sure to properly sort garbage, recycling, and compost using the guides below. Remember, landfill is a finite resource. Not only do we reduce amount of material that ends up in landfill by properly sorting waste, we also reduce CO2 and Methane emissions when we utilize recycling and composting.

Food Sovereignty Hub Team

Puyallup Tribe Sustainability
Food Sovereignty Hub Advisory Team

The Sustainability Program is in development of a Food Sovereignty Hub in order to grow food for membership, provide cultural and self-sufficiency teachings, connect community, and promote land stewardship.

This year the Puyallup Tribe was one of the recipients of the Bureau of Indian Affairs Tribal Climate Resiliency Annual Award. The award is to fund land preparations, barn construction, greenhouses, tools/equipment/supplies necessary for operation, and a full-time Agroecology Program Coordinator.

To ensure that this is an inclusive, informed, and well-rounded program, we will be forming a volunteer based advisory team to help with project decision making. This advisory team will serve as a committee that helps to influence programming, inform choices made, and support the success of, the food sovereignty hub.

Ideally, we are looking for participants to have experience and a passion for any of the following areas or related:

    • Indigenous food systems
    • Traditional medicines
    • Traditional Ecological Knowledge
    • Agroecology
    • Farming, hunting, fishing
    • Native plants
    • Horticulture
    • Food processing
    • Environmental stewardship
    • Food policy
    • Farm business
    • Environmental education

The group will meet in person and/or virtual on a monthly basis that is scheduled for a time that works for the group once established. For research purposes this group will also be invited to tour some local tribal food production establishments, community farms, nurseries, and like establishments as the opportunities come along.
